2021 Nordic PhD workshop 

Organized by the Nordic Society for Middle Eastern Studies:

“Perceptions of a Global Middle East”

(Online, 19–20 August, 2021)

Welcome to the Nordic PhD workshop “Perceptions of a Global Middle East”, to be held as an online event (Zoom) on 19-20 August 2021. 

The aim of the workshop is to bring together doctoral candidates from the Nordic countries and from various academic fields that engage with the study of the Middle East. This workshop is the latest in a series organized by the Nordic Society for Middle Eastern Studies (NSMES); the next will be in 2o24. It is open to doctoral candidates registered at any Nordic institution, who must also be members of the NSMES. 

The workshop will consist of a keynote lecture and of working groups, tutored by senior scholars from Nordic institutions, in which doctoral candidates present and discuss their ongoing PhD work in a cross-disciplinary, international Nordic setting. Participants will receive a certificate of participation that recommends that they should be awarded 3 ECTS, though the actual ECTS awarded will be up to each participant’s institution, not the NSMES.

The keynote lecture will be given by Dr. Amro Ali with the title Thinking with metaphor in a literal era. Amro Ali is a lecturer in political sociology at the American University in Cairo (AUC), a research fellow at the Forum transregionale Studien (EUME) in Berlin, and a member of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His PhD dissertation examined the city of Alexandria as a political laboratory under conditions of revolution and counter-revolution 2010-2015. His specialized areas of focus include Arab public spheres, Mediterranean studies, contemporary Alexandria, global studies, cities, citizenship, exile, technological modernity, sociological-philosophy, and political philosophy with a focus on Hannah Arendt, Václav Havel, and Byung-Chul Han.
